Skådespelarna pratar om Eclipse
Kristen Prout interjuv!
"For sure. I think the real point when I felt complete and utter mania, was when I showed up to the 'New Moon' premiere. And there were fans, this was on Monday, there were fans that had been there since Thursday, camping out in tents. You walk out onto the carpet and your heart just stops, because it's like winding all the way down the street. There are these people who are screaming and they're crying. And Rob (Pattinson) and Taylor (Lautner) and Kristin (Stewart) show up and people are just bawling their eyes out. And you're like, what is going on here? This movie hasn't even come out, but still, I had people just screaming and asking for my autograph. And I get recognized in stores. It just goes to show you that, it's not even out yet and people have done their research already, and you're like, oh my goodness! They're so obsessed!"
I hear you are a bit of a bookworm. Did you read the books before this all happened?
"I'd read all the books beforehand, because my sister is not a very big reader. We're complete opposites. She's completely inclined towards math. And I'm kind of an avid reader. So I saw her reading and I was like, 'What are you reading that's holding your interest?' And she said, 'Oh, there's this series called 'Twilight'.' So I went and I borrowed her books. And I read one a day. I just shot through them."
That's how I read them too.
"Yeah, exactly! I went through them, boom, boom, boom. I read them and I thought it was a really good series and everything. And then I got the audition and everything and I was like, 'Oh cool!' But what was funny about the audition process was that I walked into the audition room and people were so nervous, because the first film has already come out. And people knew how big the franchise was, so the amount of nerves in the audition room...I've never seen anything like it. And I was like, 'Oh my gosh! This is a whole new level of crazy. It's like 'Harry Potter'.' I remember when that casting was going on, hearing some of the stories from the casting rooms there, and it was the same thing. People were just dying to get into this movie, right? So it's just about staying out of that headspace. That panic. Because there were so many actors I know that really, they're amazing performers. And they walked into that room and they blew it. They wanted it too much and they were so, so nervous. It was crazy."
I actually wanted to ask you about the audition process. Did you go after this one? Did you get the call?
"I just got the call. I went for one of the other vampires, Bree, and the vampire Bree is supposed to be thirteen years old with very short brown hair. So physically I was absolutely wrong for the part. But I went in, and the casting director and the director liked me so much that they said, 'OK, you know what? We have another part.' So they fit me in through that audition, into Lucy, who is also a newborn vampire, and she actually is the one who turns Jasper, which is interesting. The thing about Lucy is that she has long blond hair and very very pale blue eyes and skin, so physically I was a big match for Lucy. I went in for one more audition for Lucy and I ended up showing up on set a few days later."
From what I recall, Lucy is described, but you don't actually see a lot of her...is that right?
"The thing is, if you read the book, it's done in a very different way. In the book, it's kind of a flashback. In the book she's more of a vampire who...she was just kind of part of turning Jasper, whereas in the movie, it's kind of featured, and it's actually a scene, and Lucy is a lot more prominent in turning Jasper, so it's a bit different. But I can't tell you much." [laughs]
I'm assuming, since it was 1863 when Jasper is turned...
"Wow, look at you!"
[laughs] It's been a while since I read them, so I did my homework. You're in period costume then?
"Yeah, well, I mean, again, I can't really tell you too much, but it was cool because I've never actually done anything period. You look at my past parts and they've been ninja and girl-next-door and crazy random stuff. But I've never ever done a period piece, so for me, this whole project, being able to do a period piece was huge for me. And to have a character that was back in time was a lot of fun."
Because the character is being done a bit differently than it was in the book, did you have any leeway to create the character? Everyone else has a pretty detailed character description.
"I think we've all played vampires differently. The way I think about it, everyone is so different. I think about how some people express their hunger, some people express love, some people express all there emotions, they have these certain characteristics that, when they're hungry or when they love something, their reaction to it is so different, so playing a vampire was interesting for me. Because who's the authority on what it's like to smell blood?"
[laughs] You make a good point there.
[laughs] "And how do you react to that, right? So we all kind of took our own approach. Do you seduce your prey? Do you scare them so they're scared stiff? Do you seduce 'and' terrify them? It was something to play with that was definitely fun because you're playing make believe. Which is the most fun as an actor."
I know you mentioned playing a ninja, and I believe you studied tae kwon do. Is that right?
"Yeah, I did tae kwon do for a very long time, and I made it to recommended black. I consider myself a black belt just because...[laughs] I got recommended black belt, and then I got 'Elektra' and I couldn't go to class anymore, but I had four personal trainers, who were all trained in tae kwon do and various martial arts. I did all my own stunts. [laughs] I pretty much finished my training there."
So will you be doing any stunts in 'Eclipse'?
"Um, yeah. I mean, there are lots of stunts in the movie. I can't really disclose a lot, so..." [laughs]
What's the weirdest fan interaction you've had so far?
"One of the most peculiar and unbelievable to me...well, I think the camping out since Thursday pretty much took the cake...the weirdness factor. Girls were crying and screaming and they'd been living in tents with Bunsen burners. And I was like, 'Are you actually serious? You're doing this for a movie?' [laughs] But to me, in person, I got recognized...I was at The Gap, buying a hoodie, just completely random, right? I'm in line and this girl kind of looks at me...she's the cashier...and she goes, 'Lucy!' I figured she thought I was her friend or something and she mixed me up, because who's going to recognize you from a movie that hasn't come out? I'm used to getting called Amanda, the character on 'Kyle XY' that I usually get recognized for. So I was like, 'Oh, no...' And she was like, 'Lucy! Lucy! Lucy, you're a vampire!' And the whole store kind of stopped. 'You're a vampire! You're Lucy!' I was freaking out! I was like, 'Um yeah, uh...' You don't know how to react. 'Well, that's not really me. My name is Kirsten. I'm a real person.' She just started to completely freak out, and start describing the part of the book that I was in. It sounded like she really thought this had happened to me! And she just went absolutely nuts. And I was just like, holy cow, if this is 'before' the movies come out, I can't even imagine after it actually goes to theaters. I was anticipating response, but not of the magnitude I've experienced so far."
If I were you, I'd avoid Hot Topic.
"Yeah I know! [laughs] I've actually been told that in a very serious way though. I was told that by Jackson who plays Jasper. We were talking about...he used to come out of his apartment during filming and not be able to make it down the stairs because of flashes from the magnitude of paparazzi. But he was saying that as well. Avoid a lot of the teen stores. To not go anywhere near those kind of teen, Tiger Beat, Hot Topic, that kind of scene. Because you really will be in danger. And I was like, 'Holy crap.'"
There were three big stories out about the 'Twilight' franchise today. First, the big numbers. Second, Miley Cyrus saying she hates 'Twilight'. And third, the Vatican saying negative things about the films. What is your reaction to all this?
"Yeah, I saw the Miley Cyrus video and, I mean, she's a person and that's her opinion. [laughs] I don't really know. I don't want to comment too much on Miley Cyrus' opinions in general, but she's entitled to say whatever she wants. As for the Vatican...the Vatican pretty much condemns everything. It condemned 'Harry Potter'. [laughs] Anything bigger than the actual church is condemned a lot of the time. To have attention, and that kind of fandom and that dedication, I think that's unattractive to them. And it's kind of expected. Vampires, mythical creatures of the night. I mean, look at the witch hunts and all these things that have happened with the Vatican. It's a topic that they don't really like to discuss a lot. It is what it is. And everyone is going to have their different reactions and everyone is entitled to say what they want. But, I think Miley Cyrus and the Vatican both...[laughs] The level that it's portrayed on. I mea, we have this pop star and we have the church, and everyone is holding it at this equal level. Oh my god! You know what I mean? [laughs] 'Twilight, Twilight'! And it's just a movie at the end of the day...just go in and enjoy the movie! Take it for what it is. It's make-believe. It's a teenage franchise. It's a lot of fun."
I hesitate to even ask this, but what do you think about all the buzz around whether or not Rob Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are a couple?
"Thank you so much for asking it that way. On the red carpet, you should have heard it. The questions that were being asked. But at the end of the day, it's funny. People want to believe that they are a couple so badly, because of the Bella and Edward storyline. It is what it is. When you're in the public eye, people tend to view you as your characters. But people just need to keep in mind that they're both people. And they both have their own dynamic that's completely separate from being a vampire and a human. [laughs] They're two actors...they work in the same industry. They have a lot in common to sort of talk about on set. They certainly get along very well. But the speculation about whether or not they're a couple, I mean, who can really say? It changes every day. The media's opinion on it. I don't know if at any one point it's accurate."
"I think they're handling it very well. They have a lot of fun with it. [laughs] At the end of the day you just have to focus on relationships and be able to laugh about stuff like that...they're very private people. They're extremely private people. And I mean, they'll do what they want and if they're not a couple, they're not a couple. They're just good friends. And if they are a couple, they make an amazing couple. At the end of the day, it is what it is."

Chris Weiz pratar med Entertainment Weekly!
What was your biggest fear going into [opening] weekend?
CHRIS WEITZ: I didn’t have any particular fears. The tracking numbers were enough to indicate that I wouldn’t be letting the studio down. But if one could imagine their biggest fears, it would be complete rejection of the movie, by the fans. What I’ve realized over the last week is I won’t necessarily get good reviews for this movie. Having swallowed that, this was made for the fans, and if you don’t get it, then you don’t get it.
Did the negative reviews surprise you?
Nothing surprises me in terms of reviews. Having been a reviewer myself, there are only two ways to spin this story. You can either be the one guy who says this is a great movie, or more likely, take a more jaundiced view of the whole thing. And given the media blitz that has accompanied New Moon, it’s rather unsurprising. I do wish there was more appreciation for cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe. I think he’s a genius and I think he made something beautiful.
A lot of fans say they like the movie more than the book, that New Moon was their least favorite book in the series.
New Moon takes a lot of time to read and you have a lot of time without Edward in the picture. And here in the compressed scenario of the movie, there is less time without RPatz. And the fact that Taylor [Lautner] does such a great job, to the reading audience who’s been very skeptical of him, here he is in the flesh, and it’s quite something.
What do you think is Taylor’s best scene?
When he jumps into Bella’s room. There is so much pathos there even though it’s melodrama, there’s something touching about it. Or maybe the last moment he has, just when he says Bella’s name. You sort of understand just how crushed he is at that moment. There are a few times where he’s absolutely that guy and it’s really lovely. He’s that guy for the fans and that’s what I always thought he could do.
Do you think Kristen evolved as an actor in this movie?
I’m not sure she evolved as much as she had room to run. She’s a thoroughbred as far as actors go. To me, she can do know wrong. The experience of working with her and the caliber of work she was doing was pretty extraordinary. Let’s put aside girl in love with a vampire, her ability to manifest these emotions below the surface, above the surface just to get things right. She’s extraordinarily exacting of herself and in those moments where I was able to give her the room to do that are things I’m very proud of. That’s a high point.
You made the movie you wanted to here?
Yes, pretty much. In terms of what I wanted to do with the gloss of the picture, the look of the picture, I’m very satisfied with it. And satisfied to touch back with the crew and the actors and to feel we made it under humane conditions as well. No actors were harmed in the making of this movie.
What about dealing with the paparazzi? Did you have any run-ins?
I did a bit of a Sean Penn at LAX. When we were leaving for the European tour. We had left from our L.A. press junket to go to LAX and someone nearly ran us off the road trying to get to one of the cars. We were followed by eight different vans and there was some really dangerous driving. And I understood for the first time how things happened to Princess Diana (I don’t think I’m Princess Diana), and I understood for the first time why celebrities lash out and what’s that about. My first thought upon getting out of the car was, “Who was that driver of the car?” I never found him, but I did lift someone by the hood. A photographer. He was in my way. They have a legal right to be there but they don’t have an ethical right, and he was obstructing my path, and there was someone else I threatened to knock their teeth out. It’s not like me but I felt very protective at that moment and very attacked. There is a huge difference between the attention of the paparazzi and the attention of the fans. The fans have been lovely. The paparazzi in my opinion are a very low form of primate.

Intervju med Anna Kendrick
Do you think your supporting role in Twilight can result in backlash from fans of more serious fare?
I understand a certain amount of backlash to something that’s really popular. I think particularly this being popular with young women, it takes a certain amount of flack. I mean, I can tell you a lot of the actors in Twilight are incredibly talented. It might be something that’s driven toward young females, but it has no bearing on anybody’s acting chops.
There’s a picture online of Robert Pattinson kissing you. Do people tease you about that?
I have seen fans comment on places that post them, but no one in person has ever said anything but nice things to me about being in Twilight. The fans, when you are removed from them and they’re on the internet, can seem a little scary and overwhelming. Even at the premiere, which was loud and massive and crazy, once you got up to the fans to start signing stuff, they were really warm and respectful.
Is that part of your job a source of anxiety?
Premieres are always interesting. Every time I sort of convince myself that it’s going to be fun, I get a little nervous right beforehand even though it’s coming from a good place. Having that much energy thrown at you is really intense and just a little jarring.
Can you even begin to fathom what Rob is going through?
Yeah, I went Comic-Con and I have never seen anything like it. For whatever reason Rob and Twilight kind of flipped the switch in people’s heads, and all they can do is scream. It is really intense but I kind of wanted to see what it was like for myself. I kind of needed to know first-hand because I’d seen these videos from the first Comic-Con they did. I just figured it was a once in a lifetime kind of thing, so I had to see for myself. And it was every bit as intense and terrifying as I thought it was going to be.

Interjuv med Rob
4TNZ went to the New Moon press conference and miraculously didn’t pass out from all the hotness. Especially when it came time to ask Robert Pattinson a question…
As always, he was bitingly charming:4TNZ: Do you appreciate Edward more with each movie? What do you like best about him?
Rob: When I read New Moon, it gave me ideas about how to play Edward in the first film. It’s the one I connected to the most, and the one that humanized Edward for me the most, as well. In the first one, he still does remain, from beginning to end, an idealistic character. But, in the second one, he makes a mistake that’s acknowledged by everybody, including himself. Also, he is totally undermined by more powerful creatures, and he’s undermined emotionally by people as well. That’s what humanized it.
Since I read that book, I always liked him as a character, and I’ve tried to play that same feeling throughout the films. He’s the hero of the story that just refuses to accept that he’s the hero, and I think that’s kind of admirable.
And here’s more from RPattz, including his craziest fan encounter and whether he would ever want to fight Taylor Lautner….
Q: What was it like to film that break-up scene between Edward and Bella?
Rob: There’s something weird about it. One of the main things I felt doing that and what really helped was people’s anticipation of the movie, and the fans of the series’ idea about what Bella and Edward’s relationship is and what it represents to them. It’s some kind of ideal for a relationship. And so, just playing a scene where you’re breaking up the ideal relationship, I felt a lot of the weight behind that. Also, it took away a fear of melodrama. It felt seismic, even when we were doing it. It was very much like the stepping out into the sunlight scene, at the end. You could really feel the audience watching, as you’re doing it. It was a strange one to do.
Q: What were your thoughts while you were filming that scene in Italy, where Edward reveals himself in the sunlight?
Rob: I just came to a realization about that scene. It was one of the closest moments I really felt to people’s emotional attachment to the character because there were so many extras there who were just Twilightfans, who had flown in to be in the town square. Just taking that one step into the light, it’s been the one moment, since the first Comic-Con, where I’ve felt the whole weight of anticipation and responsibility to all the people who are so obsessed with the stories. It was a good moment. It was very nerve-wracking, but I probably felt the most in character that I’ve ever felt, throughout the whole series, at that moment.
Q: If there was a fight between Edward and Jacob, who would win?
Rob: I don’t know. I think it’s actually a fact that Edward would win, if I read the books correctly. So, I guess I can hold onto that, for my ego.
Q: What about in a fight between you and Taylor Lautner?Rob: I did hear, the other day, that Taylor had agreed to an interview where the interviewer was going to fight him. I don’t think I’d ever agree to that. And, after looking at Taylor’s martial arts videos from when he was like nine, I wouldn’t really want to do anything. Maybe if I had some kind of weapon.
Q: What personality traits do you share with Edward?
Rob: I guess stubbornness, in some ways, about some things. He’s pretty self-righteous. I get quite obsessive about things, and possessive as well.
Q: With all of the fan encounters that you’ve had, has there been anything that’s just made you laugh?
Rob: Yeah, a lot of the time. Recently, I have less direct interaction with people because there’s way more security and stuff on set. But, I always find it funny when older people come up. There was a woman who came up to me the other day who must have been in her 90s. It’s very unusual. And, they say exactly the same things as 12-year-old girls. That is kind of bizarre.
Q: When you are shooting the more romantic things, what goes through your
head?Rob: It’s weird. I keep getting told by people, ”Pump up all the stuff about the action, so the guys will go and see it,” but it’s ridiculous. It’s like saying that guys can’t appreciate romance. I don’t think you can say that about Gone with the Wind. I’ve watched Titanic and I didn’t think, ”Oh, this is a girl’s film.”
Especially in New Moon, and actually in the whole series, I’ve never played it thinking, ”Oh, I’m in a series of girls’ films and I’m doing something just for girls.” I don’t feel like I’m doing an animated Tiger Beat, every week. I like doing romantic scenes. I felt like a lot of the storyline in New Moon is very heartbreaking and true. I didn’t think I was doing something, just for the sake of romance. I thought, in a lot of ways, that it was a really sad story.
Q: Have you ever serenaded somebody?
Rob: Oh, no! I don’t think that would ever be romantic…. Jesus Christ! I actually can’t think of a single romantic thing I’ve ever done. That’s terrible.
Q: Have you ever given anyone flowers?
Rob: Yeah, I did. I put a flower in someone’s locker when I was 15 years old. This girl, called Maria. Maybe I was 14. She actually thought it was from someone else, and the other guy claimed it as well, which was just great.
Q: What was it like watching Taylor transform physically?
Rob: I didn’t see Taylor until just a little bit before we started shooting, so when he came back, I had the same reaction as everybody else. I was like, ”Now I have to go to the gym.”
Q: What’s the weirdest or funniest thing you’ve ever read or heard about yourself?
Rob: Recently, some magazine had on the cover that I was pregnant. I was just like, ”Wow!” And, it was without a hint of irony or anything. I didn’t really know what to make of that one. I don’t even know if that qualifies as libelous because they can just say, ”Well, it’s obviously fiction,” but it’s written in a non-fiction magazine. I saw a couple comments under the article saying, ”That’s why he always wears jackets. He always wears layers to hide it.”
